In a significant development, Apple has announced that it will be extending the availability of its Emergency SOS via satellite feature for an additional year at no extra cost for existing iPhone 14 users. The innovative service, which was introduced a year ago and is now available in 16 countries and regions on the iPhone 15 lineup as well, allows users to text with emergency services even when they are outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.
The announcement comes after multiple instances where the Emergency SOS via satellite has proven critical in saving lives. “From a man rescued after his car plummeted over a 400-foot cliff in Los Angeles to lost hikers found in the Apennine Mountains in Italy, we continue to hear stories of our customers being able to connect with emergency responders when they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing.
In addition to the Emergency SOS feature, Apple has also recently introduced Roadside Assistance via satellite. This service enables users to connect with AAA if they encounter car trouble while outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. Other safety capabilities include the Find My app, Crash Detection, Check In feature, and the Medical ID in the Health app.
The extension of the free trial applies to iPhone 14 users who activated their device in a country that supports Emergency SOS via satellite before 12 a.m. PT on November 15, 2023. Roadside Assistance via satellite is available in the U.S., in partnership with AAA, and is included for free for two years from the time of activation of a new iPhone model. This satellite service requires iOS 17.
The move to extend the free access to the Emergency SOS via satellite service underscores Apple’s commitment to user safety and is set to further enhance the iPhone’s appeal as a device that goes beyond communication and entertainment.
For iPhone aficionados, the annual Apple product launch event is akin to Christmas morning. It’s a moment of anticipation and excitement, as we eagerly await what the tech giant has in store for us. And this year, Apple has not disappointed. The much-anticipated iPhone 15 has been officially unveiled, and it brings a slew of exciting new features to the table. Let’s dive in and explore what makes this latest iteration of the iconic iPhone so special.
The Transition to USB-C: A Necessary Move
One of the most significant changes in the iPhone 15 is the transition from Apple’s proprietary Lightning charging connector to the universally accepted USB-C port. This shift was prompted by a ruling from the European Union, but Apple has embraced it wholeheartedly. Now, when you purchase a set of headphones or a Bluetooth speaker, the included cable can also be used to charge your iPhone.
Apple, known for its innovation, refrains from acknowledging the EU ruling explicitly. Instead, the company states that USB-C has become a universally accepted standard. Furthermore, Apple emphasizes the iPhone 15’s compatibility with a wide range of charging options, including the popular MagSafe wireless charging technology.
In a nod to power users, the iPhone 15 Pro models are equipped to support faster data transfer speeds when using USB-C with a compatible USB 3.0 cable, promising a seamless and efficient experience.
A Splash of Colours and a Redefined Design
Apple has always understood the importance of aesthetics, and the iPhone 15 continues this tradition with a fresh range of colours. Pastel hues like pink, yellow, green, and blue join the lineup, alongside a classic black option. Notably, this marks the first time Apple has introduced a vivid pink option in its flagship range.
The iPhone 15 Pro models take a more subdued approach with a choice between a sleek black (midnight) or a sophisticated cream (starlight), complemented by an all-new blue variant.
The construction of the iPhone 15 Pro models also undergoes a significant transformation, as they boast a titanium outer casing. This innovative material not only adds durability but also reduces the overall weight of the device, making it a welcome change for users of the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max models. Apple describes this as the “most premium material ever used in an iPhone.”
Moreover, Apple has refined the design by minimizing screen edges, allowing for a more immersive experience as the display stretches further to the edges of the device. Software-wise, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus introduce Dynamic Island, which integrates camera and sensor functions within the screen, providing quick access to contextual information.
The Action Button: Customizable and Versatile
A surprising change in the iPhone 15 Pro models is the absence of the traditional mute switch. In its place, Apple introduces a programmable action button that users can customize according to their preferences. This versatile button can perform a variety of tasks, such as muting or unmuting the phone, launching apps, starting voice memos, or activating Do Not Disturb mode.
Revolutionary Camera Advancements
Apple continues to push the envelope with camera technology in the iPhone 15. Even the entry-level models feature a 48-megapixel main camera, promising greater detail and improved light capture. Each pixel acts as a focus point, enhancing image quality and focusing capabilities.
Computational photography takes center stage once again, as the iPhone 15 combines data to deliver unparalleled image quality and resolution, even in non-Pro models. Portrait photography receives a significant upgrade with “Next Generation Portraits,” expanding the creative possibilities for users.
The iPhone 15 Pro models take camera technology a step further. The 48-megapixel sensor is enhanced with new preset focal lengths on the main lens, providing photographers with greater flexibility. The Pro Max model boasts a remarkable 5x zoom with a 120-millimeter focal length and an f2.8 aperture. The advanced zoom is achieved without adding bulk to the device, thanks to innovative lens design. Additionally, improved image stabilization and enhancements in night mode and low-light photography are present on all three lenses in the iPhone 15 Pro models.
Furthermore, both iPhone 15 Pro models support the capture of “Spacial Videos,” a 3D video format that aligns with Apple’s upcoming Apple Vision Pro headset, set to launch next year.
A Lineup to Suit Every User
Apple understands the diversity of its user base, and it caters to various needs with four distinct iPhone 15 models. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus share the powerful A16 Bionic processor, while the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max boast the brand-new A17 Pro Chip. The Pro models also come equipped with a triple-lens camera system, offering professional-grade photography capabilities. Campad Electronics has cases and accessories for all of these new iPhone 15 models.
Pricing and Availability
Pre-orders for the iPhone 15 series began on Friday, September 15, available at Apple stores, major retailers, and leading telecommunications providers. The iPhone 15 starts at $1499, with the Plus variant priced at $1,649. For those seeking the pinnacle of iPhone technology, the iPhone 15 Pro starts at $1849, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max begins at $2199.
Apple’s latest iPhone 15 release is a testament to the company’s commitment to innovation, design, and user experience. With a transition to USB-C, stunning design choices, versatile customization options, and groundbreaking camera advancements, the iPhone 15 is poised to become the must-have device for iPhone enthusiasts and tech enthusiasts alike. As we eagerly await its release, Apple continues to redefine what is possible in the world of smartphones, leaving us excited for the future of technology.
Great news for iPhone owners! The highly anticipated iPhone 15 launch date has been set for September 12. Apple will be unveiling its new range of iPhones and next-generation smartwatches at 10 a.m. California time, which is 3 a.m. on September 13 in Australia.
Based on previous years’ timelines, pre-orders for the iPhone 15 are expected to begin in Australia on September 15, with in-store availability starting on September 22. So mark your calendars!
Under the tagline “Wonderlust,” Apple plans to introduce two entry-level models and two high-end models in the iPhone 15 range. One major change we can anticipate is the switch from the lightning connector charging port to a USB-C port, aligning with new European Union regulations. Additionally, updated AirPods with a USB-C charging port are also expected to be unveiled.
The entry-level iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, featuring 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays respectively, are likely to receive upgrades such as the A16 chip, Dynamic Island interface, and a 48-megapixel rear camera, borrowing some features from the iPhone 14 Pro models.
For the high-end models, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple is rumored to introduce a redesigned frame made of stronger and lighter titanium instead of stainless steel. Thinner screen borders, an advanced A17 chip using 3-nanometer production, and a new mute button may also be part of the package. Camera improvements, including a deeper optical zoom, are expected on the Pro models as well.
While pricing details have not been confirmed, it is likely that the standard models will be priced similarly to the current iPhone 14 lineup. However, there have been reports of increased pricing for the iPhone 15 Pro range.
In addition to the iPhones, Apple is set to launch the Series 9 Apple Watches and a second-generation version of the high-end Ultra model, which will feature faster chips for improved performance.
Excitement is building as the iPhone 15 launch draws near. Get ready to experience the latest in Apple’s innovative technology. Stay tuned for more updates and be among the first to get your hands on the new iPhones and Apple Watches.

Emergency SOS via Satellite, a new function available on Apple’s iPhone 14 handsets in Australia and New Zealand, has the potential to save lives in our most remote regions.
iPhone 14 Emergency SOS via Satellite Emergency Relay Centre
As of today, 15 March 2023 Apple has introduced their groundbreaking safety service called Emergency SOS via satellite, for iPhone 14 users in Australia and New Zealand. This innovative technology allows users to connect with emergency services even when they are outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. It is an important feature that ensures users can reach out for help in critical situations, regardless of their location.
Every variant in the iPhone 14 lineup, including the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, has been equipped with custom-designed hardware components and deeply integrated software to enable direct satellite connectivity. This game-changing service builds upon existing features like Emergency SOS, Medical ID, emergency contacts, and Find My location sharing. By leveraging satellite communication, iPhone 14 users can share critical information with emergency services, as well as reassure their friends and family of their whereabouts when traditional connectivity options are unavailable.
Emergency SOS via satellite connects users to relay centers staffed with Apple-trained emergency specialists who are prepared to contact Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) on behalf of the user. This efficient process ensures that users receive the help they need promptly. Since its initial launch in 12 countries, this service has already played a significant role in saving lives. Furthermore, Apple is offering this service free of charge for two years from the activation of a new iPhone 14 model, making it accessible to a wide range of users.
iPhone 14 Emergency SOS via Satellite Report Injury
The launch of Emergency SOS via satellite has been met with enthusiasm by the Albanese government in Australia. The Hon Michelle Rowland MP, Minister for Communications, expressed the importance of staying connected in regional, rural, and remote areas, especially during emergencies. This service will help emergency services in responding to incidents and safeguarding individuals from harm. The government encourages Australians to familiarize themselves with this capability and check if their device supports it, highlighting its potential to enhance personal safety.
iPhone 14 Emergency SOS via Satellite Who Needs Help Screen
The ability to contact emergency services using Emergency SOS via satellite provides a strong backup solution for Australians, ensuring they can reach out for help even when mobile coverage is absent. This feature will significantly aid emergency Satellite communication poses unique challenges due to the rapid movement of satellites, their distant location from Earth, and limited bandwidth.

However, Apple has developed innovative solutions to overcome these obstacles and enable iPhone 14 users to connect seamlessly with satellites. By designing custom components and software, Apple has eliminated the need for bulky antennas, allowing the iPhone 14 to connect to satellites using their unique frequencies.
To optimize message transmission speed, Apple also created a text compression algorithm that reduces the average message size by three times. This compression algorithm ensures that even short messages can be delivered swiftly, with users experiencing message exchange times as quick as 15 seconds in clear conditions. Apple has also provided a built-in Emergency SOS via satellite demo, enabling users to test satellite connectivity on their iPhone without actually contacting emergency services. This feature allows users to familiarize themselves with the process and gain confidence in the service’s capabilities.
Beyond emergency situations, the advanced satellite technology incorporated in the iPhone 14 offers additional benefits. Users who venture beyond cellular or Wi-Fi coverage can utilize Find My to share their location via satellite. By opening the Find My app, accessing the Me tab, and selecting My Location via Satellite, users can easily send their precise location information to reassure friends and family. Moreover, the satellite connectivity on the iPhone 14 lineup supports other safety features such as Crash Detection and Fall Detection, enhancing user safety in various scenarios.
Emergency SOS via satellite and Find My via satellite are now available not only in Australia and New Zealand but also in Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, the U.K., and the U.S. To access these features, users must have iOS 16.4 or later installed on their devices. Apple’s commitment to expanding the availability of these services reflects its dedication to ensuring the safety and peace of mind of iPhone users across the globe.
Emergency SOS via Satellite Warning
How Emergency SOS via Satellite Works
When it comes to accessing emergency services, the iPhone already offers a convenient way to make emergency calls by simply pressing and holding the side button along with one of the volume buttons. However, with the introduction of Emergency SOS via satellite, iPhone users now have an additional lifeline in situations where cellular or Wi-Fi coverage is unavailable. This innovative feature presents an easy-to-use interface that utilizes satellite connectivity to connect users with the help they need.
To initiate Emergency SOS via satellite, users are presented with a straightforward questionnaire on their iPhone. This questionnaire, designed in collaboration with experts, aims to gather essential information through a few simple taps. The user’s responses are then transmitted to dispatchers as part of the initial message, ensuring that emergency services can quickly assess the situation and determine the user’s precise location. By working closely with experts and incorporating standard questions and protocols, Apple has created an efficient system that caters to the most common reasons for emergency calls.
Once the questionnaire is completed, the intuitive interface guides the user to point their iPhone towards the sky to establish a connection and send the initial message. This message contains crucial details such as the user’s questionnaire responses, location including altitude, iPhone battery level, and, if enabled, the user’s Medical ID. Additionally, users have the option to share the transcript of their interaction with relay center specialists with their emergency contacts, ensuring that loved ones are kept informed during critical situations.
The Emergency SOS via satellite feature is supported on the iPhone 14 Pro model, and its user interface provides a clear representation of the emergency communication process. Screens on the iPhone 14 Pro display various prompts to gather important details from the user, such as the nature of the emergency, who requires assistance, whether there are any injuries, the description of the emergency, and relevant factors that may apply to the situation.
With Emergency SOS via satellite, Apple has further enhanced the capabilities of the iPhone, empowering users to connect with emergency services even in locations with limited connectivity. This feature not only ensures the prompt delivery of critical information but also offers peace of mind and support during emergencies.
The capability was introduced with the release of the iPhone 14 last September and has been accessible in the US for a while. This potentially life saving update comes hot on the heels of the release of the yellow iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus recently.

There are some really nice new safety features such as the iPhone 14 range will come with crash detection which is a feature similar to fall detection, but crash detection will know if you have been involved in a car crash and will send a warning to emergency services.
Another safety feature is Emergency SOS via Satellite. This is when antennas inside the iPhone 14 range connect to a satellite to inform people that you know that you are in distress.
When connected and you have a clear view of the sky, the iPhone owner is able send messages for assistance via Apple’s system to send a text based message in 15 seconds.
You will be able to use Find My to send your location via satellite. This potentially life saving feature will initially be available in the U.S. and Canada. Apple did not mention the availability of his for any other countries.
Also, in the later aprt of 2022 Apple stated that Apple Fitness+ will be available for all iPhone users, even the people that do not have an Apple Watch.
